Dara opens her window for the sound of the waves. The crash and boom, boom seem louder than at Indigo. The Pacific is bigger than the Atlantic and, odd, even from here it looks and sounds bigger. She shivers, feeling its power and ferocious beauty. It’s cold. She props up in the window seat and leans back, listening, absorbing the rhythm and momentum. Out the window, she senses the last edge of the continent. Metaphor for her, Lee might call it. What a good place to sit. She pulls up a pillow behind her shoulders. I should always have a window seat for dreaming, for musing. As she reels through the beauty she saw today, all shades of blue and slate, high scudding clouds and the enormous clean sky over the water, silvery light glancing along the cresting waves, she feels her shoulders come down, a constriction in her throat loosen. The thrum, like that of a pylon in a cornfield, vibrates down her spine. Shock, she realizes; I should ask Mimi. I think I’ve been in a diagnosable shock. And now here’s the Pacific slamming the beach, dark as the night. Finally, the panic that started that night in Washington, the panic that settled in her throat, making her always want to gasp for air, the panic that drove out any vision of the future and undermined the vision she possessed, the panic dissolves. How, she’s not sure, maybe the beauty and immensity of the big world drives it out.

For once, she’s not thinking of the aborted wedding, the future, or of anyone, not even herself.
